Mt. Assiniboine

Early September is usually the best time of the year to go backpacking into Mt. Assiniboine with temperatures in the low twenties, larches turning color, and generally drier weather. However, this time the first few days were summer like which then turned to winter with a foot and half of snow. Our adventure didn’t end here. We encountered a bear with two of her cubs, elevation changes greater than expected, a battle to stay dry, and of course a helicopter ride out.

Mt. Assiniboine with a dusting of snow. Taken from the lodge.

We hiked in from the Sunshine Village. The route has a lot of elevation change but the scenery is worth it.

Larches turning color. Taken near the lodge.

On our hike out we encountered a foot and half of snow. Next morning we hiked back to Mt.  Assiniboine Lodge and took a helicopter out.

Helicopter ferried about 60 people out that day.
